Fossil resin gathered from trees along the Philippine Islands, dammar comes in irregular, walnut-size, pale yellow chunk.
Used frequently since the 18th century for making varnishes and mediums, dammar is dissolved by light stirring in solvents such as turpentine or mineral spirits. It yields a rich, glossy, reversible film.
Since dammar contains a small percentage of insoluble wax, it is slightly cloudy in solution. You can eliminate this cloudiness by leaving the solution undisturbed for several days, then straining it once oe twice with a piece of cheescloth or filter paper.
